Candidate who filmed himself in the Capitol on Jan. 6 seeks House seat

Derrick Evans, a former West Virginia state lawmaker who served three months in prison after pleading guilty to a felony for participating in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, is hoping to return to Washington.

Evans faces Rep. Carol Miller in Tuesday’s Republican primary for West Virginia’s 1st District. The three-term congresswoman is a staunch supporter of former president Donald Trump. Miller, a bison farmer from southern West Virginia, was among the group of 126 Republican House members who, in December 2020, filed an amicus brief in support of a lawsuit contesting the results of the 2020 election. She also voted against certifying election results from some states on Jan. 6, 2021.
