Houthis cut off key Saudi oil route as US hammers Iranian minelayers

Tensions in the Middle East reached a boiling point this week as Iran backed Houthi rebels seized critical territory along Yemen’s Red Sea coast, effectively cutting off a vital oil transit route for Saudi Arabia. The rebel forces captured the strategic port city of Mokha and a key island within the Bab el Mandeb Strait, moving swiftly through areas where government defenses reportedly collapsed. Local residents described scenes of hysterical panic as families fled the advancing fighters on motorcycles and foot, contributing to a displacement crisis that has seen roughly 80,000 people forced from their homes since early September.

In response to the escalating regional instability, United States forces launched targeted strikes against Iranian naval assets located on Larak Island. These operations specifically focused on dismantling minelaying capabilities intended to disrupt maritime traffic in the region. While the U.S. military emphasizes its continued dominance in the Arabian Sea, members of Congress have warned that Tehran is utilizing its Houthi proxies to open a second front against American interests and global trade networks.

The geopolitical fallout extends beyond the battlefield, impacting global energy markets and sparking diplomatic friction. Following their territorial gains, Houthi forces claimed responsibility for drone and missile strikes against Saudi military installations, leading to casualties and structural damage near the border. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump indicated that while he expects the broader conflict with Iran to resolve around the time of the upcoming midterm elections, current disruptions are fueling a worldwide oil crisis that requires immediate attention across multiple theaters of war.

As the Yemeni government admits to painful defeats and vows to commit more troops to reclaim its coastline, the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate. Civilians caught in the crossfire describe total chaos as soldiers retreated under fire, leaving thousands vulnerable as the Houthis consolidate their grip on some of the most strategically important waterways in the world.
