SpaceX Stock-Split Watch: Here’s When It Should Happen

SpaceX is positioning itself to capture what it calls the largest actionable market in human history, eyeing a staggering twenty eight trillion dollars in potential growth. With a current valuation hovering around two trillion dollars and shares already trading in the triple digits, investors are beginning to speculate on when the aerospace giant might implement its first stock split. While fractional investing has made high priced stocks more accessible, many analysts argue that lowering the per share price would attract a wider pool of retail investors and improve overall liquidity.

One significant driver for a potential split could be the company’s appetite for acquisitions. Much like Berkshire Hathaway used different share classes and splits to facilitate the purchase of Burlington Northern Santa Fe, SpaceX may find that issuing lower priced shares is the most efficient way to fund future deals without draining its cash reserves. Given that SpaceX remains unprofitable and is heavily invested in an expensive AI arms race, using stock as currency for strategic buyouts seems highly probable.

Looking at the playbook of Elon Musk’s other massive venture, Tesla, provides a helpful roadmap for timing. Tesla historically waited until its shares approached or exceeded the thousand dollar mark before triggering splits in 2020 and 2022. Since SpaceX shares are currently trading significantly below that psychological threshold and hold an average price target near two hundred thirty dollars, a price driven split is unlikely to happen tomorrow.

Ultimately, while a stock split is not imminent, it remains a looming possibility as the company scales. Whether triggered by a desire to democratize ownership among smaller investors or necessitated by a multi billion dollar corporate acquisition, a split will likely serve as a signal that SpaceX has entered its next phase of maturity. For now, observers will be watching both the share price trajectory and the company’s M&A activity for signs that a change is coming.
