Anthropic CEO Amodei set to meet with Trump after missing state dinner

Dario Amodei, the co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, is scheduled to hold a private dinner with President Donald Trump this Sunday at the White House. This highly anticipated one-on-one meeting follows Amodei’s conspicuous absence from a lavish state dinner held for Chinese President Xi Jinping earlier this week. While other prominent tech figures like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg were seen mingling with government officials, Amodei missed the event due to a scheduling conflict, prompting the president to extend a separate invitation for a more intimate gathering.

The timing of the visit is critical as Anthropic prepares for what many expect to be a massive initial public offering. However, the road to this meeting has been rocky. Tensions flared recently after Amodei urged the AI industry to slow its development pace and called for stricter government oversight. The suggestion did not sit well with President Trump, who took to Truth Social to mock Amodei’s stance and insist that his own leadership provides all the guardrails necessary for American super intelligence. These frictions are layered atop a deeper political divide, given that Amodei was a vocal critic of Trump and supporter of Kamala Harris during the 2024 election.

Beyond personal clashes, Anthropic is currently locked in a legal battle with the Department of Defense. Following failed negotiations over how military forces can utilize its models—specifically regarding concerns over autonomous weapons—the Pentagon designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk. This rare move effectively blacklisted the company from military contracts and suggested it posed a threat to national security. A federal appeals court dealt another blow to the company on Friday by upholding this designation, leading some defense officials to celebrate the ruling as a victory against corporate interference in military operations.

Despite these setbacks, there are signs that others within the administration are open to reconciliation. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick previously indicated that Anthropic was back on the right side of things, following productive dialogues led by co-founder Tom Brown rather than Amodei himself. With white house officials emphasizing terms like American competitiveness and innovation, Sunday’s dinner represents a pivotal chance for Amodei to repair his standing with the president and secure his company’s future in an increasingly volatile regulatory landscape.
