Yemen’s Houthis seize strategic Red Sea city of Mocha

Iran backed Houthi forces have captured the strategic Red Sea city of Mocha, marking a significant escalation in the Yemeni conflict and granting the group expanded control over the Bab al Mandeb Strait. Government forces were forced to withdraw on Thursday following intense military pressure, a move described by officials in the internationally recognized Presidential Leadership Council as a tactical withdrawal intended to allow troops to regroup. Reports indicate that Houthi fighters are already pushing further south toward Dhubab, leaving government commanders scrambling to halt the advance.

The fall of Mocha carries heavy implications for global commerce given that the Bab al Mandeb is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints. Defense analysts warn that controlling this coastline allows the Houthis to potentially disrupt international shipping using simple artillery rather than relying on complex missile or drone strikes. Rashad al Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, stressed that this development is no longer just a domestic issue but a regional crisis, warning that Yemen must not be allowed to become a proxy state similar to how Iran influences other regions.

While Houthi spokespeople claim the operation was about national sovereignty and insist that international trade will remain safe and uninterrupted, they maintained their current ban on Saudi vessels. Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions are spiking globally. At an emergency UN Security Council session, the United States accused the Houthis of acting as Iranian puppets, while UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg warned that Yemen is facing its greatest risk of returning to full scale war since the 2022 truce.

Observers suggest that the rapid seizure of Mocha may have been caused more by disorganization among anti Houthi forces than by sheer military superiority. As government forces pledge to launch counterattacks to retake the city, neighboring Saudi Arabia faces a precarious situation, with analysts predicting possible tit for tat responses to prevent further instability along its borders and within these vital shipping lanes.
