This financial commitment signals strong institutional confidence as Qualcomm pivots away from its traditional stronghold in smartphone processors toward high performance computing.
The collaboration will focus on developing multiple generations of customized silicon designed specifically for AI inference within the AWS ecosystem. By combining Amazon’s massive cloud scale with Qualcomm’s expertise in power efficient processing and system level integration, the two companies aim to address the exponential growth of AI workloads. This move follows closely on the heels of Qualcomm revealing its Dragonfly C1000 central processing unit earlier this year, a product already slated for adoption by Meta starting in 2028.
This shift highlights an emerging trend where central processing units are becoming just as critical as graphics processing units for scaling agentic AI workflows. While Nvidia continues to lead through GPU hardware used for heavy model training, industry analysts suggest that CPUs are increasingly necessary to handle sequential general purpose tasks without consuming excessive energy. Bank of America expects the overall CPU market could more than double to reach 60 billion dollars by 2030, creating a lucrative opening for players like Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD.
By securing partnerships with hyperscalers like Amazon and Meta, Qualcomm is aggressively pursuing a target of 15 billion dollars in data center sales by fiscal 2029. The company plans to support this goal with a diverse roadmap featuring specialized AI chips and interconnect technology meant to link multiple processors together efficiently.
